Sailing a Yacht under a Silver moon to Bermuda from the Caribbean

There is something magical about the ocean and yachts. I was a boat Captain for many years but the one voyage that sticks out was a trip from the islands of the Caribbean to Bermuda around 1985 or 6.

I was navigating a 42 foot yacht, sailboat from St.Thomas to Bermuda around July, it was calm and hot with light winds.

Gypsey lady was a Van Der Stadt designed boat and it sailed fast and true.

It is around 800 miles to Bermuda and I expected to be there in 7 days.

It was a perfect sailing voyage, light winds but steady filled the Mainsail and Genoa and she sailed fast cutting a wake to Bermuda in the North Atlantic Ocean.

I loved this boat but it was the nights that made the moment last forever, the sea was full of a bright moon and my yacht easily sailed into the swells and moved around 7 knots which is slow perhaps 8 miles an hour.

My autopilot worked well and I listened to the humming of the sails for hours as we inched towards a distant small island through the Devils Triangle.

Nights became days but as night fell again, I felt the peace and serenity of the silver moon on the ocean. For some reason it cut into my mind as unforgettable and perfect.

There was no problems on storms on this journey, everything was just right and the yacht was flawless under a silver moon.

The next leg of the voyage from Bermuda to new York would be hell as I sailed into hurricane Andrew meeting it half way between the 2 points and powerless to control anything in 40 foot seas and 90 mile an hour winds. When real estate clients ask me today is a Hurricane bad on land in Mexico, I just smile when comparing a Hurricane at sea in a small boat, total terror comes to mind. But that is the nature of yachts and oceans, 95% heaven and 5% pure hell.
